We wanted to share an update regarding the proposal for the 35 metre TELUS cell phone tower at Lakeview United Church.

On May 20, 2025, the Lakeview Community Association (LCA) officially received a circulation package from the City of Calgary for the proposed cell phone tower. We have 21 days to provide feedback. This submission will supplement the letter we previously sent on May 13, 2025, which formally requested that the City issue a non-concurrence for the TELUS proposal.

We are grateful for the support we’ve received from various individuals and organizations who have also submitted letters on Lakeview’s behalf. These include:

  • Letters from MP Shuv Majumdar requesting non-concurrence to Melanie Joly, Minister of Industry as well as to the City of Calgary
  • Letter from Frank Clegg, CEO of Canadians for Safe Technology and former President of Microsoft Canada, to the City of Calgary
  • Letters from Shelley Wright, Founding Director of Canadian Educators for Safe Technology, to the City of Calgary as well as Joanne Pitman, Chief Superintendent of the CBE and Nancy Close, School Trustee
  • Submissions from Lakeview residents

These letters (excluding the individual resident submissions) will be posted on our website in case you would like to read through them.

As mentioned in the newsletter, if you are keen to submit a letter in opposition of the project, you can send an email to PD.CellTower@calgary.ca .

Lastly, the change.org petition is still active and has reached over 1400 signatures. If you have not had a chance to sign it, it’s still not too late.

The Lakeview Community Association was informed by community residents that TELUS is proposing to install a 35 meter cell phone tower at the Lakeview United Church located at 3023 63 Avenue SW.

The LCA has not been consulted on this proposal, although two board members attended the TELUS open house on February 13, 2025.

As a first pass, TELUS has sent out consultation packages to all parcel owners within 300 meters of the proposed facility on January 23, 2025. 21 days after the consultation period began, TELUS held an open house on February 13th at the Earl Grey golf course. Comments on the proposal were due to Evolve Surface Strategies, the firm managing the TELUS consultation by February 22nd.

The LCA had submitted a list of questions to TELUS to better understand the need for the proposal. Attached are the responses to our questions.  Once TELUS submits a formal application to the City of Calgary, the LCA will have another opportunity to provide feedback.
