LCA Main Hall Survey
The Lakeview Community Association (LCA) is excited to be participating in a new project through the University of Calgary’s Work Integrated Learning Studio. Through this program, the LCA has the opportunity to work with two student architects under the guidance of acclaimed architect Philip Vandermay of Spectacle Bureau for Architecture and Urbanism. Philip was recently inducted as a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. Together, they will develop a range of concepts for the future of our main hall and the surrounding community space.
Why are we looking at the hall’s future?
Our main hall is reaching the end of its useful life. The main hall building required temporary structural supports to be installed a couple of years ago to allow ongoing occupancy. If another immediate/ongoing concern arises, this will result in the immediate closing of the building.
Renovating the existing hall is not considered a viable option. The City has provided a preliminary estimate of $2–3 million to bring the building up to current code requirements.
As we look ahead, we are exploring four potential directions:
- Option 1: Fully demolish the main hall and construct a brand new building with space for a daycare/preschool (approximately 720 m²)
- Option 2: Fully demolish the main hall and construct a brand new building with a smaller footprint (approximately 250 m²)
- Option 3: Renovate the field house (skate shack) with a new office for the Operations Manager, demolish the main hall, and add more outdoor amenities
- Option 4: Demolish both the main hall and field house and create more of an outdoor community hub
What do you think?
This is an important opportunity for Lakeview to help shape what our community space could look like for years to come.
How would you use the main hall in the future? Do we need an indoor gathering space? What amenities would you like to see in our community?
Please take a few minutes to complete the survey and share your thoughts. Your feedback will help inform the concepts developed by the students and, ultimately, the LCA’s conversations about the future of our community space. If you forget to take the survey, don’t worry there will be more engagement opportunities in the months to come.
Thank you for helping us imagine what’s next for Lakeview!
